“Maybe a tutor would be better.” Her eyes dropped to the floor. She didn’t want to suggest a wife, if she couldn’t fill the position.

CHAPTER 6

By the following day, Mrs. Kelton had spread the word about Angelica and the Christmas decorating. Several other women dropped by the cabin with a few extra ribbons or baubles to add to the tree. Each one told Angelica they were pleased to make her acquaintance. Several openly suggested she stay in Mistletoe and be their children’s teacher.

Angelica accepted all the attention with kind smiles and grateful comments. By noon she was tired but feeling happy.

“I’ve never been so popular.”

Adam looked unconvinced. “I’m sure you are always the belle of the ball.”

A trill of laughter floated across the room. Angelica sat up straight. “No, my older sister was always the belle of the ball. My younger sister was always the cute one. I am the middle sister, considered plain and almost a blue stocking because I like to read.”

“If you’d stay here to teach, you would have every mother and child in the area worshiping at your feet.”

“Perhaps I can talk to Mr. Reece about sending back to my school for one of my friends. I know of at least two who would be willing to come to Mistletoe to teach.”

A frown marred Adam’s face.

“What’s wrong?” Angelica asked, but there was no time for Adam to answer, because an insistent pounding on the front door drew Adam and Angelica’s attention from their conversation.

“Who can that be?” Adam grumbled. He stomped toward the door, grabbed the handle and flung it open. He wasn’t surprised when a fop of a man fell into the room and landed on the floor.

Angelica stared at the man with questioning eyes, then looked at Adam. “Angelica, let me introduce Mr. Rance Reece.”

Once he had regained his balance, Rance Reece stood straight. He flashed Adam an angry stare, but turned a gentle smile toward Angelica. He rushed across the room, fell onto one knee, lifted her hand and held it tightly.

“My dear girl. I was so distraught when I heard about your accident. Unfortunately, I was unable to secure transportation that would be adequate to take you back to Somerset with me until early this morning.”

Angelica tugged her hand away from Mr. Reece’s rather wet hand. She couldn’t help but pull back from him in general. There was something about him that made her feel uncomfortable and his over-friendly gesture offended her.

Rance Reece stood up straight and looked down a pencil thin nose at her. Angelica was reminded of her strict teachers in school back home.

“Do you have any bags that need to be packed?” His voice was haughty.

Angelica just stared at him.

He cleared his throat and Angelica shook her head. “I’m sorry, what did you say?”

“I asked if you had any bags you needed to pack?”

“For what?”

“Why, to accompany me to Somerset.”

Adam stepped closer. Angelica thought he looked like a grizzly bear, about to pounce on his prey. She giggled at the thought.
